Pondicherry University jumps 14 spots in NIRF rankings

PUDUCHERRY: Pondicherry University jumped 14 spots in the National institutional ranking framework (NIRF), 2019 in the overall category released by the Union human resources development ministry.
The university was ranked 72nd with a score of 44.88 in 2019 as against the last year’s 86th rank with a score of 42.36.
The varsity also improved its score under the university category placing 48th this year against the previous year’s 59th position.

The varsity, which was ranked 13th in 2016 among the universities slipped to 37th rank in 2017 and 59th rank in 2018 before jumping to 48th rank in 2019.
This year, it fared well in all the five ranking parameters viz., Teaching, learning and resources’ (47.92), Research and professional practice (26.63), Graduation outcomes (73.31), Outreach and inclusivity (59.3) and Perception (19.25) – when compared to the last year.
“This improvement was achieved despite a huge increase in the number of participating institutions from 957 in 2018 to 1,474 institutions this year,” said a release from the university.

Pondicherry University vice-chancellor Gurmeet Singh while expressing his happiness over the improved performance of the institution this year congratulated the deans, heads of the departments, faculty members and others for their contribution.
Jipmer, which finished sixth in the country among the government and private medical colleges in 2018, slipped to eighth rank this year. Pondicherry Engineering College was ranked 76th among the engineering colleges in the country.
Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth's Mahatma Gandhi medical college and research institute was placed in the rank band 101-150 in the overall category. The college also secured 72nd rank in the university category.
Kanchi Mamunivar centre for postgraduate studies, an autonomous institute, secured 49th rank among the colleges' category while Indira Gandhi college of arts and science was placed in the rank band 101-150.
President Ram Nath Kovind released the rankings at New Delhi.
NIRF ranks the institutions after assessing the primary data collected from the universities and institutions.
The framework assesses the data collected from various stakeholders of the institutions about the perception parameter.
