PUDUCHERRY: Students’ council of Pondicherry University strongly condemned police attack on students of Jamia Millia University (JMU), who staged an agitation against the Centre for passing the Citizenship (amendment) Act on Sunday.
The members of the council took out a procession on the university premises to register their protest on ‘police brutality’ on students and staff members of Jamia Millia University.
They raised slogans against the Centre for passing the CAA, which according to them is unconstitutional.
The council charged that the Centre sponsored the violence to target students for raising their dissent against the CAA. “The students were mercilessly beaten up and attacked with tear gas shells. The Delhi police molested girl students and journalists, put vehicles on fire and charged upon any student in the university premises,” said council secretary V Kuralanban.
Council president Parichay Yadav said police deployed their forces in the university with an aim to silence the opposing voices. “Not even the library of the university was spared from the police’s inhumane attacks. Many students and staff were injured,” Yadav said.
The council accused the government of launching an all-out attack on the students in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in a systematic manner. It charged that the BJP government at the Centre has launched attempts to suppress any opposing voices with all their mite.
“The students’ council condemns this police atrocity upon institutions of higher learning. We will keep up the fight to uphold the constitutional values and protect the higher education spaces in the country. We urge the students’ community to stay united at this hour of need to defend the constitutional values and stand up for justice for the resisting students of JMU and AMU. It is time to choose the side,” said Kuralanban.
