Two men misbehave with Pondicherry University girl student

PUDUCHERRY: Police arrested a 26-year-old man and launched a hunt for his friend on charges of misbehaving with a first-year girl student in Pondicherry University on Wednesday. The arrested man has been identified as P Baskar, 26, of Shanmugapuram here while his friend has been identified as Sridhar of Mannargudi in Tamil Nadu.
Police said the two men on a motorcycle approached the first year student, who was proceeding towards the hostel and invited her to join them for a tour they have arranged.Startled by the invite from the strangers, she preferred to ignore them and walked towards the hostel. The irked men showered abuses on her. They misbehaved with her and fled the scene.
The girl noted down the registration number of the motorcycle and lodged a complaint with the Kalapet police.
The police booked the two under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and managed to trace and arrest one of them. They produced him in a local court that remanded him in judicial custody.
Incidents of attack on students on the campus have been on the rise. On April 3, a second-year girl student from Assam was molested by two motorcycle-borne men on the campus. The student and her friend were proceeding to their hostel when the two men on the motorcycle stopped near them and touched her inappropriately. The girl screamed and raised alarm. The men escaped from the spot. They are yet to be arrested.
In a similar attack a couple of months ago, a motorcycle-borne man assaulted a girl student in the presence of a security staff member, who not only remained a mute spectator but also refused to divulge details of the registration numbers of the motorcycles of her molester. A first-year male student from Odisha was sexually abused by a gang of four men at knifepoint. The issue came to light only after the victim’s friend posted a message on the Facebook narrating the incident.
