PUNE: The Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested a man from Himachal Pradesh at Pune railway station on Saturday morning for possessing hashish worth Rs22.74 lakh.
A team headed by senior inspector Sureshsingh Gaud of the GRP arrested Chamanlal Hariram Soni (34) of Kullu, while he was carrying 7.6kg of hashish.
"We found Soni lingering on the platform for a long time.
We went up to him and began questioning. We checked his belongings and found two packets of hashish, collectively weighing 7.6kg, from his possession," Gaud said.
The police said Soni boarded a train from Delhi and got down at Pune railway station with the hashish.
"Soni wanted to sell the drug either in Pune or Mumbai," the police said.
"The drug was made from marijuana plants found in the valleys of Himalaya. It is presumed that the hashish was processed in small tablets in Himachal Pradesh before Soni brought them to Maharashtra," Gaud said.
After Soni's arrest, Gaud and his team went to Himachal Pradesh to track down the source of the contraband.
"We have arrested a Kullu-based man in this regard. We suspect that the man was responsible for forwarding the drug to Soni. Our probe is on," Gaud added.
