SPPU yet to take a call on the location of the new complex in Kashmir
PUNE: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) wants to start an educational complex in Kashmir.
The proposal to start the complex was tabled and approved at the management council meeting held in the university on Friday. “The proposal will now be formulated with details and sent to the state government for approval,” SPPU registrar Prafulla Pawar said.
“Rajesh Pande, a member of the management council, tabled the proposal.
It was accepted by the members and passed as a resolution in the management council. The proposal will now be drafted with details and sent to the state government for approval,” he said.
“The jurisdiction of the university is within the state limits. We will also seek the Centre’s permission because we are planning on opening the complex in Kashmir,” Pawar said.
The authorities are yet to take a decision on the place of the complex and the courses to be on offer. “An expert committee will decide the place of the complex after we get a permission from the state government. We have not yet decided the courses — certificate/ degree/postgraduate — to be offered. We will certainly offer courses at multiple levels,” Pawar said.
SPPU has jurisdiction in three districts within Maharashtra — Pune, Nashik and Ahmednagar. But this will not be the first time SPPU giving affiliation to a course outside the three districts.
“We have an affiliated institute in Silvassa, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, with permission from the state government. The proposed complex in Kashmir will not be a distance learning centre. It will offer full-time courses. Talks are on about increasing the educational set-up in Kashmir and we, as a university, want to play out part in it,” Pawar said.
