RAIPUR: Taking the first step towards development of multilevel parking and commercial complex in the state capital's 79-year-old Jawahar Market, Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Monday razed 40 establishments.
The shops were demolished with the consent of the shopkeepers, said officials, adding that the owners were allotted a time of two days to vacate the shops.
The notice was issued to the shopkeepers a month ago, and those who failed to follow the instructions were again issued a new notice with Sunday as the deadline, said officials.
"The multi-level parking at Jawahar market will provide respite to traffic congestion at Malviya Road and Gol Bazaar - which see a lot of rush," said an official
Care was taken during the demolition drive to protect the entrance of the Jawahar market - which has heritage value and dates back 100 years.
Officials said, it will be restored. The proposed plan of multilevel parking and commercial complex is estimated to be completed in one year.
