RAIPUR: In a major case of negligence, a railway senior engineer was run over by a speeding train near Bhatapara railway station while he was involved in repair work on the tracks on Friday night. Another railway staff sustained severe injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Raipur.
The incident took place around 1am at Hathband region of Bhatapara when senior section engineer AK Chandki along with a machine staff Chandraprakash was engaged in maintenance work during 'mega block' on the track.
As it was late night and there was no proper arrangement of lights on the spot, they couldn't spot the Barauni Express suddenly coming towards them.
The train ran over Chandki and he died on the spot while Chandraprakash sustained severe injuries on his back and legs.
He was rushed to a hospital and, later was shifted to a private hospital in Raipur for better treatment where his condition is stated to be critical.
Other railway workers present on the spot were in deep shock to see their officer dead and another injured. The workers staged protest outside the hospital, alleging negligence on the part of the railways.
They alleged that the railways doesn't provide proper lights during the maintenance work at night which usually takes place between 11.15pm- 4.15am. When the senior officers visited the hospital and tried to pacify them, the workers alleged that such incidents have also taken place in the past.

They said that the repair work was going on when an OHE van came on the track and the officers shifted to another track and Barauni Express suddenly came. There was another engineer who jumped off the track raising an alarm for others else there would have been many casualties.
However, railways have assured compensation to the family of the deceased and all possible facilities to the injured from the staff benefit fund.
