Raipur celebrates Eid-ul-Fitr with family bonding, sheer khurma and more
After a month of fasting, the city is ready to soak itself in the fervour of Eid-ul-Fitr today. While thousands of believers will offer prayers at the beautifully decked up mosques and idgahs of Raipur; at home, friends and family will exchange greetings and gifts along with warm embraces and grand feasts.
Mention Eid, and the first thing come to mind is sheer khurma. Each family has its own recipe for this dessert, which is an integral part of the celebrations.
Trying her hand for the first time in preparing the dish today is Bushra Ansari, an MBA student.
She says, “I am preparing sheer khurma for the first time for family and friends, and I will be following an age-old family recipe handed down to me by my family. It is a huge responsibility for me, which I can’t afford to go wrong with, as I am expecting over 50 visitors at home today. Interestingly, more than our close relatives and family, it is our non-Muslim friends who visit our place during this festival.”
“We exchange love and greetings, with a warm bowl of sheer khurma,” says Bushra.
Youngsters can’t wait to get eidi from the elders today, as most of them buy their favourite things with the collected money. However, entrepreneur Ahsan Ali and his friends are planning something special this year. “Getting eidi from the elders in the family and neighbourhood is like accepting their blessings. And today, my friends and I decided to share our blessings with underprivileged children. We plan to use our eidi to buy clothes and sewayian for the kids. We also to pack homemade biryani for them. Eid is one occasion where we share our joys with everyone.”
Eid is also that special time when everyone in the family comes together in celebration. And so, it is also a time for homecoming for many. Teacher Sumaira Ali has come to Raipur from Dubai to celebrate Eid with her family. She says, “I can’t contain my enthusiasm as I speak. Eid is a very special occasion and when celebrated with family and friends, it feels complete. The simple joys of having hearty meals at home and meeting friends fill the day with love. Also, we share biryani with the people of our neighbourhood. It’s been our family tradition for over 100 years.”
