Undertrial wins panchayat poll in Raipur district

RAIPUR: An undertrial in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh has been elected sarpanch of Saddu village Panchayat under Tilda block of Raipur district. The undertrial is in jail after his wife committed suicide in 2018 allegedly over dowry harassment.
Thirty one-year-old Dr Narendra Kumar Yadav won the three-tier panchayat poll of Saddu village panchayat by 271 votes, his counsel ND Manikpuri told TOI.
The panchayat poll for Saddu village panchayat was held in the third phase of three-tier panchayat poll on February 3, 2020.
In Saddu village panchayat, as many as five candidates, including undertrial Yadav, were contesting for the post of sarpanch. Yadav got 799 and he defeated his nearest rival with the margin of 271 votes. He has been elected village sarpanch for the second time.
As per the provision of the Panchayati Raj Act, the undertrials are allowed by the district office to contest election from jail.
