History-sheeter shot by four men in Ranchi
Ranchi SSP Anish Gupta inspects the murder site in Ranchi on Sunday.
RANCHI: Wanted criminal Mohammad Imroz, alias Sonu, was shot dead by four assailants near the Daily Market area of the Main Road on Sunday afternoon.
Imroz was involved in several murder and extortion cases. He was shot while meeting some people at the taxi stand near Hanuman Mandir. Eyewitnesses said he was chatting with a friend when the four men arrived and pumped two bullets into him.
One hit him at his temple and the other in the chest. The assailants then fled.
Sources said the murder was the fallout of Imroz's increasing influence across the city in extorting money from business establishments. "He would earn Rs 3 lakh to 4 lakh every month through extortion from proprietors of different business establishments in the area," said a person on the condition of anonymity.
On October 31, CCTV cameras of a city-based eatery had recorded Imroz having an altercation with the staff. The owner of the restaurant, in a report to the Ranchi SSP, claimed Imroz was demanding Rs 3 lakh from him.
Speaking to TOI, SSP Ranchi Anish Gupta, who visited the spot, said, "After I received the restaurant owner's complaint, we kept a watch on Imroz. We will probe his murder on priority basis."
Kotwali police station in-charge S M Mandal said, "We found two country-made pistols from the spot; one of them belongs to the murderers and the other to Imroz."
Imroz shot to fame in 2009 when he was found involved in two infamous murders in the city - those of range officer Anil Singh near Van Bhavan in Doranda and businessman Raj Kumar Dhanuka near Panchwati Plaza on Kutchery Road.
