House session begins with land law ruckus
Opposition leader Hemant Soren with other party leaders and MLAs protest outside the Raj Bhavan against the new law acquisition law, in Ranchi on Monday
RANCHI: Battle lines were drawn between the opposition and ruling parties over the passage of Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act (Jharkhand Amendment Act, 2017) on the first day of monsoon session of the assembly on Monday.
The inaugural day of the five-day session began on a stormy note after the opposition opened charge against the government on the issue.
JVM-P's Poreiyahat legislator Pradeep Yadav led the attack asking if the Raghubar Das government wants to reconsider its decision and consider repealing the Act.
Opposition leader Hemant Soren also demanded a debate on the amendments made in the Act, but chief minister Raghubar Das turned down the proposal. "It is already a law that should not be debated in the House," Das said. Irked by the refusal, Soren accused Das of one-upmanship and accused him of 'gundagardi', leading to chaos in house. Speaker Dinesh Oraon said the word will be expunged from the proceedings.
Oraon then read out the condolence motion and adjourned the House proceedings till 11am on Tuesday.
Yadav later told media persons that it was the prerogative of the government on whether the assembly will function during the session. Opposition legislators Sukhdeo Bhagat and Kunal Shadangi questioned the way the government amended the Union law and sent it for President's approval.
Earlier, Yadav sat on a dharna outside the assembly demanding a CBI probe into the alleged horse-trading of six JVM-P MLAs by BJP immediately after the 2014 assembly election.
