Illegal sand miners pelt stones at cops in Bermo
BOKARO: Bermo sub-divisional officer Nitish Kumar Singh and his team had a close shave on Thursday night as miscreants engaged in illegal sand mining on the banks of Damodar river pelted stones in a bid to thwart a surprise raid.
Singh and other officials had visited the river bank after a tip-off on illegal sand mining and its transportation. Apart from Singh, the raid party comprised circle officer Pranab Ambasht and police personnel.
Though the miners escaped, eight tractors loaded with sand were seized from near Khetko village.
Singh said, “When we reached the spot, we found several tractors without registration numbers loaded with illegal sand on the river bank. I stopped a few tractors and was inquiring the drivers about the sand being ferried when they fled from the spot.” He added, “Later, they returned with a group of anti-social elements and pelted stones at us. Fortunately, no one was hurt.”
An FIR was filed at Petarwar police station against seven named and 20 unidentified persons while three were detained for questioning.
Meanwhile on Friday morning, a joint team of the administration and the mining department led by Singh conducted a surprise inspection at five stone crushing units and sealed them for flouting several norms.
Though four of the units are licensed while the fifth has applied for one, the team found they are running without proper documentations of stocked stone chips and boulders. “We have asked the stone crushing units to produce all necessary documents related to the stock, land, license and other environmental clearances for verifications,” Singh said.
