GARHWA: A sorceress killed a 47-year-old woman with a trishul (trident) in Jharkhand's Garhwa district on Saturday, allegedly in a bid to release the victim from the possession of a "powerful spirit". The sorceress Alam Devi and her husband Satyendra Oraon were arrested on Sunday.
Rudni Devi, a resident of Konmandira village, was ill for the last few days. Instead of consulting a doctor, however, her family sought Alam's help on Thursday.
Alam apparently performed some tantrik rituals on the patient, but her condition didn't improve.
Alam told the victim's family that the spirit possessing her is very powerful and that Rudni and her kin would have to stay at her place for some more days to "free" the patient. "While performing a black magic ritual on Saturday, Alam killed Rudni with a trishul," said a police officer.
Soon after the death, the family rushed back with Rudni's body. Based on a tip-off, Banshidhar Nagar SDPO Neeraj Kumar and SHO Pankaj Tiwari started checking vehicles on the Adhaura-Saphi Road to apprehend the kin with the body. The police team spotted the family trying to escape with the body and detained them. Rudni Devi's family narrated the entire episode to cops.
"Multiple stab wounds were found on the body, while the eyes were also gouged out and nose broken. Police have seized the trishul used in the murder," said the SDPO.
