RANCHI: In order to attract IT and IT-enabled companies to invest in Jharkhand, the state information and technology department will hold the maiden Jharkhand BPO summit at Judicial Academy in Dhurwa here on August 22.
Speaking to TOI on Saturday, state IT director U P Sah said, "The summit has so far received confirmation from 39 BPOs and IT-enabled companies across the country."
After the 2016 BPO policy by the state IT department, this will be the first major summit.

Ever since the BPO policy was launched, Jharkhand has started taking giant strides in this sector to generate employment, said the IT director.
"In the last one year, as many as 11 BPOs, with a capacity of 4,000 seats, have set up their centres in Jharkhand which have given direct employment to around 12,000 people in three shifts," he added.
The upcoming summit will witness memorandum of understandings (MoUs) for at least 2,500 new seats. "About seven companies are slotted to sign MoUs with the state government on August 22 for setting up of new call centres which have a total capacity of 2500 more seats. Slowly, investors are showing a positive response in Jharkhand," said Sah.

Siddharth Kumar Rai, joint director of Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Ranchi, said Jharkhand is seen as a favourable destination of the east because the market here is yet to be tapped and the labour is cheap. "For example, Bhubaneswar has virtually reached its saturation point while same is the case with Kolkata, thus, giving Jharkhand an edge over others," he added.
BPO policies, both at the Centre and the state, are attracting players to look towards Jharkhand, he added. Under the Centre's India BPO Promotion Scheme, Rs 1 lakh subsidy per seat is given on capital investment by the government of India. State government under its policy, is providing subsidy on operational costs like waiver in electricity bills, GST and other operational benefits.
"All these collectively make a good package for investors. For example, Concentrix which set up a BPO with 850 seats in Ranchi few months ago, has now planned to open two call centres with a capacity of 1,000 seats each in Ranchi," Rai informed.
Sah said that low attrition rate too is an encouraging factor. "The industry average of annual attrition in this sector is about 30% but it is a meagre 4% in Jharkhand. Jharkhand is truly poised for a BPO boom now," he said.
