SHILLONG: Migrant workers started returning to Meghalaya with at least 284 residents entering the state on the first day they were allowed entry after passing the mandatory medical screening.
Chief minister Conrad K Sangma said that all those who have come back to the state have to undergo strict home quarantine along with all their family members as a safety measure for 14 days, during which time they would be provided with rations by the state government.
He added that his government has started the process of bringing back around 15,000 people from the state stranded in different parts of the country
Those who came back to the state on Tuesday entred via the four designated designated checkpoints - Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills, Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi, Dainadubi in North Garo Hills and Tikrikilla in West Garo Hills District. While several persons arranged for their own transportation, the Meghalaya government, in coordination with the Assam government, had arranged for buses for the conveyance of those stranded in Assam.
"The bus service begins from different locations of Assam for stranded citizens from Meghalaya," Sangma had tweeted earlier in the day. "In the first phase, we will be facilitating the movement of people from within the northeast," Sangma added.
