SHILLONG: Incessant rainfall in the past few days has wreaked havoc in Meghalaya trigerring landslides in many places. Rivers like the Umkhrah and the Kynshi have been flowing in full spate leading to water-logging in many places in and around Shillong. The East Khasi Hills District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) is on full alert.
Landslides have damaged roads in many places like Malki in Shillong.
Low-lying areas in the city remain submerged with the polo ground area in the city being one of the worst-hit by waterlogging. Although no casualties have been reported yet, a weather forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Meghalaya on July 11 and 12, and chances of extremely heavy rainfall is there on the July 13. Many parts of the state remain without power as landslides have severed electric lines in many places. The inclement weather has brought down many trees as well which has caused great damage to power and communication channels.
"Further, for quick and effective response by the district administration, the officers have been detailed for duty with immediate effect and they are to keep their mobile phones on to receive calls and alerts through SMS," the notification added. Deputy commissioners of various districts were alerted and advisory has been issued for information of the public. "Sincere efforts are being made to restore power supply at the earliest, but due to reasons beyond control, power supply in some areas could not be restored. In certain cases interventions of other departments like forest, PWD is also required," a statement said.
