SHILLONG: Landslips in different parts of the state owing to incessant rain has cut off several remote villages along the Bangladesh border from the rest of the state.
Himalaya Shangpliang, the MLA from Mawsynram, in a letter to East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Matsiewdor War Nongbri said that the border villages between Dangar and Ryngku including Hatmawdon have been cut off since PWD roads have been washed away at different places.
"Food and essential commodities like rice, salt etc are no longer available locally.
Therefore, I request you to kindly make immediate arrangements to provide food and essential commodities to the affected villages at the earliest," the legislator wrote.River Umngi, which flows along the international border, is also flowing above the danger level. As a consequence, erosion along the banks has caused damage to a number of schools and houses. Five shelters have been made - three at Brahmaputra House and one each at ICDS and RCLP. People residing along the vulnerable area were advised to move to the selters.
