SHILLONG: The body of an eight-year-old girl, suspected to have been raped and murdered, was found in a jungle at a village in South Garo Hills district on Monday.
A 31-yr-old man, B Ghose, suspected to be the culprit, was beaten up by angry villagers and later handed over to the police.
The incident took place at Megua Songmong village under Gasuapara police station on Sunday, when the child was reported missing.

According to locals, the suspect, who hailed from a nearby village, was known to the victim and had been working in the village for about a year now.
South Garo Hills SP Abraham T Sangma said the accused had been handed over to the police. "We have arrested the accused in the case and an investigation is currently on," he added.
Meanwhile, the body of the victim has been taken for autopsy to the Baghmara civil hospital. The postmortem reports are awaited.
"This is absolutely condemnable and the perpetrator of the crime needs to be given the strictest punishment possible. We will ourselves push for no leniency to be shown to the culprit. This is seriously insane," said Achik Youth Council (AYC) president, Silning D Sangma.
The Garoland State Movement Committee has expressed anger over the incident and called for death penalty to the culprit and adequate compensation to the family of the victim.
The committee also maintained that the incident was a pointer towards "unabated influx" of outsiders into the state.
