SHILLONG: Chief minister Conrad Sangma said the unimpressive performance by those from the state in competitive exams and the school level has to be addressed as soon as possible.
The overall pass percentage for Class X exams was 76.56% this year. The state's performance in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) was abysmal, 36.2%.
"Every child across the state should be entitled to quality education.
In spite of financial constraints, the government is doing its best to for the overall improvement of the education sector," he said after inaugurating the higher secondary (arts) section of the Shillong Public School here in the presence of education minister Lahkmen Rymbui.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the school's silver jubilee celebrations, the CM said that the government accords top priority to the education sector even as he urged all stakeholders to work with a committed effort to improve the education scenario in the state. "Education is the defining factor in the overall progress of the state and we must all work together with a determined mindset to overcome all the challenges in the education sector," he added.
Highlighting the stark difference in the quality of education in the urban and rural areas, the CM said that the government is mulling the idea of focusing its resources on the worst performing schools across the state to improve and bring these at par with other better performing schools.
Education minister Lahkmen Rymbui underlined the need to formulate a curriculum framework so that students from the State get the best education to enable them to compete with the rest of the country. "In order to give an edge to students in competitive exams, the government has adopted the use of NCERT textbooks for Arts and Science streams," Rymbui said.
Stating that the education system must be prepared and adapt to the changing needs of the present times, the education minister said that the government was committed towards the implementation of various programs and interventions to streamline the education sector.
