SHILLONG: Newly elected MLA of the National People's Party (NPP) from Selsella constituency, Ferlin CA Sangma ,was sworn in as member of the 10th Meghalaya legislative assembly by Speaker Donkupar Roy at the latter's office here on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters after the oath-taking ceremony, the first-time MLA and former Meghalaya Civil Service officer said she would work for the holistic development of her constituency with a special focus on education and road connectivity.

With Ferlin's victory, the NPP, which leads the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) under the leadership of chief minister Conrad Sangma, now has 21 members, even as the strength of opposition Congress stands reduced to 19 in a House of 60 MLAs. The NPP has now emerged as the single largest party after wresting the Selsella assembly seat from the Congress.
Bypoll to Selsella Assembly constituency was held to fill up the seat which fell vacant after the death of sitting Congress MLA and former minister Clement R Marak.
In the bypoll, the result of which was declared on May 23, the NPP candidate won by a margin of 4,369 votes by defeating Congress candidate and widow of late Clement Marak, June Eliana R Marak.
