Child sex ratio tilts in favour of girls in Sirmaur

Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh recorded a rise in the number of birth of girl child last year. In the 0-1 age group, child sex ratio was recorded at 1,004 girl for every 1,000 boys. In all, a total of 4,082 girls were born against 4,074 boys in 2018-19 in the district.

SHIMLA: Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh recorded a rise in the number of birth of girl child last year. In the 0-1 age group, child sex ratio was recorded at 1,004 girl for every 1,000 boys. In all, a total of 4,082 girls were born against 4,074 boys in 2018-19 in the district.
According to Deputy Commissioner Lalit Jain, the sex ratio in 0-6 age group also increased to 963 from 931 in 2011 census.

Jain said that in 2018-19, maximum 1,588 girls were born in Paonta block of the district that also recorded birth of 1,509 boys. In Sangrah block, 634 girls were born against 602 boys, in Rajgarh block 315 girls against 372 boys, in Shillai block 530 girls against 563 boys, in Pachhad block 359 girls against 376 boys and in Nahan block 656 girls were born against 652 boys.
He said the “Beti Bachao-Beti Padao” programme has been implemented in the district in an effective manner and it is still continuing and people are being informed about the importance of girl child. He said that on the birth of a girl child, the district administration sends congratulatory message to the family and also sends them a gift.
“For the girls born in poor family, the administration provides Rs 10,000 as fixed deposit,” he said, adding that awareness on girl child’s importance is spread through folk music and street plays. He said that it is due to an increased awareness that people do not differentiate now between a girl child and a boy in the district.
The DC said that 20 panchayats that have done excellent work in spreading the message of “Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao” will be honoured in the coming days. He said that directions have also been issued that the message of “Beti Bachao-Beti Padao” be displayed in all the buses of the district.
He said that the directions have also been issued to ensure that the message is written prominently on the rain shelters along the roads including national highways. The Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique (PNDT) Act would be implemented in the district in a more effective manner for which directions have already been issued to the district health officials and they have been asked to ensure surprise checking of ultra sound clinics, he added.
