First ever kidney transplant operations conducted in Himachal Pradesh

SHIMLA: First ever kidney transplant operations were successfully done at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH), Shimla, on Monday by a team of doctors under the supervision of doctors from AIIMS, New Delhi.
First kidney transplant operation started at 9am and was completed at 11.30am while second operation stared at 12 noon and completed at around 2pm.
Though the IGMCH has its own team of doctors to conduct operations but expert’s team from AIIMS New Delhi was called for guidance during maiden operation.
As a new operation theater was not ready, so the operation theater of Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery (CTVS) was prepared for the transplant.
To ensure that kidney transplant operations are conducted within the state, selected doctors and paramedical staff were given training at AIIMS New Delhi and PGI Chandigarh.
To start the facility of kidney transplant, Himachal Pradesh government had made a provision of Rs 4 crore of which Rs 2.91 crore was to be spent on machinery while over Rs one crore was to be spent on the creation of other required facilities. State government had allotted Rs 3.48 lakh for training of doctors from IGMCH, Shimla.
With the start of facility finally on Monday, now the patients in need of a transplant will not have to go outside the state and this will save their money and time.
Of the two transplants done on Monday, in one case a 55-year-old mother from Mandi district had donated kidney to her 31-year-old son, while in the other case a 64- year-old father from Rohru had donated his kidney to his 38-year-old daughter.
While interacting with media persons, Dr Sanjay Kumar Agarwal from AIIMS New Delhi said that both the patients are in ICU and will be kept under observation for the next 48 hours.
Senior medical superintendent of IGMCH, Dr Janak Ram, said that two operations of kidney transplant conducted on Monday has been successful. He said that there is nothing to worry as already all the tests were conducted before transplant and matching was done. Around 4-5 patients from Himachal Pradesh go to AIIMS for kidney transplant every year and now this facility will be available in Shimla itself, he said.
He said that IGMCH will get help of experts from AIIMS for the first 20 transplants.
After 20 operations, the doctors of IGMCH will start conducting operations on their own.
Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur congratulated doctors for successful operations. He said that announcement with regard to starting the facility of kidney transplant was made in his budget speech this year.
