With clear weather conditions predicted till December 27, hopes of celebrating a ‘White Christmas’ in Shimla have been dashed for those who otherwise were expecting to witness snowfall in the hill town on December 25.

SHIMLA: With clear weather conditions predicted till December 27, hopes of celebrating a ‘White Christmas’ in Shimla have been dashed for those who otherwise were expecting to witness snowfall in the hill town on December 25. What’s more, according to Shimla Meteorological Centre, weather will remain clear across Himachal Pradesh from December 22 to 27.
Snowfall on December 13 had led to hope for snowfall on Christmas but now the meteorological department has predicted clear weather from December 22 to 27 in Shimla.
It was only in 2016 that snowfall was recorded on Christmas after a wait of 24 years.

Studies done in past have shown that snowfall season in the state is shrinking with decreasing seasonal snowfall and snowfall days. Most weather stations in the state are reporting increasing trend in temperature in Himachal Pradesh and J&K in the past 30 years.

During last 24 hours, minimum temperature decreased by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius while maximum temperature increased by 2 to 3 degrees. Shimla on Saturday recorded maximum of 13.7 degrees and minimum temperature of 3.4 degrees, which was 2.9 degrees below normal; Manali recorded maximum temperature of 9 degrees and minimum of 0 degree, which was 2 degrees below normal.

Dalhousie recorded maximum of 4.9 degrees and minimum of 0 degree Celsius, which was 4.9 degrees Celsius below normal. Dharamshala recorded maximum temperature of 11.8 degrees Celsius and minimum of 1. 8 degrees Celsius.

In 1989, Shimla had received snowfall from December 22-24 in 1995 from December 21 to 22, while in 2013 on December 23. In 2015 seasons first snowfall was recorded on December 13 and 14 but after that snowfall had eluded the town on Christmas and New Year.
