Shimla witnesses congestion but no jam on roads
Shimla: Tourist town of Shimla though witnessed traffic congestion but efforts made by district administration and police prevented a total jam on city roads.
For a few days now, traffic congestion is being witnessed in Shimla constantly. To prevent traffic jam, extra staff of 120 has been deployed, in addition to 180 personnel of traffic police. There are 14 police riders working most of the times on the roads and police station staff is additionally deployed during rush hours.
To ensure the smooth flow of traffic, the administration had announced holiday of all government and private schools of town on Saturday, which helped ease the situation.

In Shimla, there are 1,12,000 registered vehicles, the number for the district is approximately 1,65,000. There are around 7,500 hotels and guest house rooms. Parking space created by hotels can accommodate 2,500 vehicles, while public parking can can take in another 2,500 cars.
Many employees in the state capital have vehicles registered outside and there are around 9,600 vehicles usually parked on roads within the Shimla Municipal Corporation jurisdiction. These are apart from the tourist vehicles.
Daily in-out at Shoghi barrier is around 4,000 vehicles during usual times, while from Ghanahatti side it is half of that. Last week, the number rose to cross 10,000 at Shoghi entry point.
The roads coming from Darlaghat side join Chandigarh road at three points from Chakkar side, Boileauganj side at Kannedy Chowk. At the interjections, traffic is stopped to make way for incoming or outgoing vehicles. Similar is the situation at Tutikandi bifurcation where buses movement is frequent and traffic one side is stopped to make passage for vehicles from other side.
