Damanganga villages on alert as Madhuban dam may release water
Ukai dam built over Tapi river has started receiving some water due to rainfall
SURAT: Ukai dam built over Tapi river has started receiving some water due to rainfall in its catchment areas in Tapi district on Saturday.
The water level in the dam has risen by half-foot to 276.16 feet from its existing level. The water is flowing into the dam at the rate of 4,229 cusecs because of rainfall in Utchal and Songadh talukas of Tapi district.
Meanwhile, several parts of South Gujarat received rainfall on Saturday too.
Rain has been lashing the region for the past couple of days.
RM Patel, superintending engineer, Ukai dam, said, “We expect good inflow of water into the dam by July 15. Rainfall is expected in the upper catchment areas of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh in the coming days.”
Valsad district authorities have sounded a warning for people living in the villages situated on the banks of Damanganga as water at the rate of 35,000 cusecs was expected to be released from Madhuban dam near Silvassa into the river.
“We have asked people living in the villages on the riverbanks to remain alert,” sources said.
Valsad taluka recorded 69mm, Dharampur 81mm, Kaprada 51mm and Vapi 54mm rainfall in Valsad district in 12 hours until 6pm on Saturday.

All talukas of Navsari district recorded up to 82mm of rainfall. Dang district recorded an average rainfall of 35mm in all the talukas during the period. There were no reports of any casualties due to rain in the region in the past 24 hours, sources said.
Surat city remained cloudy throughout the day and received 1mm of rainfall during the period.
