THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In what could be a shock to parents of school students who relied on parallel service vehicles, the police on Tuesday booked as many as 15 drivers of such services for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The police booked them following a surprise checking drive focusing on parallel service vehicles that transported school students and also private buses.
Those booked include drivers of mini vans, jeeps and autorickshaws. The cases were detected under Museum, Pettah, Thumba and Kazhakkoottam police station limits.
City police commissioner S Surendran said that steps have been taken to suspend the driving licences of those booked and also cancel their vehicle permits so that they would not be able to transport students again.
“Their job requires them to get up very early in the morning to start the services. They must understand that the effects of alcohol would not wear off in a few hours and what they do is very dangerous for the children,” the commissioner said adding that such surprise inspections will continue in the coming days too.
Police personnel of all local police stations in the city had participated in the checking drive along with officials of city traffic wing. tnn
