3 arrested for series of armed robberies
Thiruvananthapuram: The Kazhakkoottam police arrested three members of a notorious gang, which was behind many armed robberies reported in the district. The police identified the accused as Ashraf (21) his brother Ansar (19) and Vishnu (23). All of them are residents of Thonnackal near Mangalapuram. Two other members of the gang, Al Saj (25) and Thoufeeq (19), who are also residents of Thonnackal, were arrested by Medical College police on Wednesday.
One of the gang members is yet to be traced.
Police officials said that the three accused were arrested in connection with three armed robberies reported under their station limits in recent days. This include cases on robbing Rs 10,000 and two mobile phones worth Rs 20,000 from Kannur native Rafeeq at Vetturoad, robbing Rs 10,000 and a mobile phone from West Bengal native Mandeep near Nippon Toyota showroom at Kazhakkoottam and robbing mobile phone worth Rs 12,000 and money purse from Thirur native Anoop near Kazhakkoottam block office. Besides these cases, the accused also admitted to committing two more robberies at Chullalath and Vazhayila.
They are also accused of committing similar robberies at Nedumangad and Venjaramood police station limits, where they are wanted by the police. Their modus operandi was to intercept people travelling at night and threaten them by brandishing swords and daggers at them. They did not hesitate to attack those who resisted the robbery attempt. They travelled in two motorcycles. The youths have as many as six assault cases pending at Mangapuram police station too.
It was the arrest of Al Saj and Thoufeeq by Medical College police during a robbery attempt inside MCH campus that made way for the arrest of the other three at Kazhakkoottam.
