THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has flown to the UAE where the first regional summit of the Loka Kerala Sabha (LKS), covering West Asia, will be held on February 15 and 16.
Vijayan, along with speaker P Sreeramakrishnan, K C Joseph MLA, non-resident Keralites affairs (NORKA) department officials and various other LKS members will attend the regional meet at the Etisalat Academy in Dubai.
The two-day event will witness elaborate deliberations on welfare of non-resident Keralites and other related issues.
Vijayan landed at the Abu Dhabi airport around 7.30am local time on Wednesday and was received by Norka Roots vice chairman M A Yusuff Ali and Norka Roots director Azad Moopen. The CM was accompanied by his media advisor John Britas and chief secretary Tom Jose.
The discussions at the summit will be based on the recommendations by seven subcommittees of the LKS, according to the organizers. The summit is being hosted by the LKS members in the Gulf region and is being held ahead of the second LKS assembly scheduled for January 2020.
The CM will address the NRKs at Etisalat grounds at 7pm on February 15, and the summit will also witness cultural events depicting the unique traditions, arts and culture of Kerala.
Last month, officials from NORKA had visited Dubai to convene a preparatory meeting for this ‘miniature version’ of the first LKS assembly held in the state capital early in January 2018. The recent deluge that devastated the state had delayed the conduct of this regional summit covering West Asia.
As per the government decision, the LKS has to be convened once in every two years, and regional summits in between, focusing on different regions like West Asia, Europe, Americas and Far East Asia.
The regional summit in Dubai will also be relevant as it would turn out to be a platform for serious deliberations on the state government’s ‘Rebuild Kerala Initiative’ intended to build a resilient Kerala that could withstand natural calamities in future.
