THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city corporation has installed dry waste collection boxes in the city as part of its 'no burn campaign'.
Mayor V K Prasanth inaugurated the first collection box installed opposite Manmohan Bungalow, Kowdiar, on Friday.
The project is part of week-long Environment Day events organized by the corporation.
According to the mayor, burning of dry leaves and other waste contribute gravely to air pollution.
"Dry leaves can be dumped into the boxes. Initially, we are installing three collection boxes at Kowdiar, LMS and near All Saints College. While the box is spherical here, others will have different shapes and we are also beautifying the areas with benches and selfie corners. The boxes, once full, will be cleared by corporation workers who will grind the leaves in a shredder and compost it usingaerobic bins," Prasanth said.
Expo on waste management: A compost exhibition is also being organized at Palayam Connemera Market. The event aims to create awareness about waste segregation at source and on low-cost waste management equipment . A biogas plant system by Suntech Bio-Energy Systems and a rotary twin drum compost machine by M-Way Consultants and Developers are the highlights of the expo.
Bookings are open for the biogas plant system that comes in different sizes. The rotary machine is an alternative, which is more compact than the plant.
