FRAT demands waste processing units in all wards
Thiruvananthapuram: Federation of Residents Associations Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) has demanded the city corporation to set up garbage processing units in each ward.
FRAT members said that corporation should find a solution for waste disposal, before slapping fines on people who dump garbage on streets.
The corporation council meeting held on September 19 approved a modification in waste management bylaw by adding a clause to reward people who report on dumping waste at public places including roads and water bodies to the corporation.

“The corporation should conduct a survey to check the waste disposal facilities in hundreds of flats in the city. Many of the residents dispose of the waste on road, rivers and canals as many of the apartments do not have the facility to collect and dispose of garbage properly. So they gave it to some agencies (who charge more than the fine imposed by the corporation) but dump the waste in public places. Such agencies turn the Veli, Thiruvalam, Pozhikulam, Killiyar, Parvathy Puthanar and Amazhinjam canal into landfill area,” said FRAT general secretary Pattom Sasidharan Nair.
According to Frat chairman M S Venugopal, the priority of the corporation should be to set up mini centralized waste plants in each ward. “The fine announced for dumping waste on road can be effective, only after city corporation creates proper management systems for liquid and solid waste in each ward,” he said.
