Mohanlal seeks Rs 50-cr damages from Khadi Board
Thiruvananthapuram: The cash-strapped Khadi Board now faces an unexpected trouble. Actor Mohanlal has sent a legal notice to Khadi board vice-chairperson Shobhana George, seeking Rs 50-crore compensation, after the latter made a public statement against his charka-spinning advertisement for a private firm.
In the legal notice, the actor has asked George to make a public apology and retract her statement within 15 days or give Rs 50 crore as compensation for denting his image in public.

During a press meet on Thursday, George said that the Khadi Board had the moral responsibility to question misuse of ‘charka’ or the song ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’.
“We had sent a letter, you can’t even call it a legal notice, to the private firm and Mohanlal against use of Charka and the bhajan in the ad for a private party. Soon the ad was pulled off. Then, we received a legal notice from Mohanlal seeking public apology or Rs 50 crore. We are yet to send a reply. We also don’t find any reason to apologize,” she said. The legal notice was sent in the name of Shobhana George in November, last year.
George said that it was improper for Mohanlal, being brand ambassador of Kaithari, to feature in an advertisement of a private textile firm.
Mohanlal, in the legal notice, said that the charka and bhajan were used with a good intention to honour traditional weavers. Officials of Khadi Board said that name khadi or charka could not be used by other commercial agencies without the permission of Khadi commission.
