NHAI to remove step ladders along NH-66

NHAI to remove step ladders along NH-66
Thiruvananthapuram: The problem of unauthorized step ladders installed along national highway 66 at Kazhakkoottam remains unsolved and is apparently heading towards a conflict between authorities and residents and traders.
Two weeks ago the police had decided to remove these ladders that provided easy access between the highway and the service road running parallel to it, as they pose a danger to motorists and pedestrians.
But, the stakeholders involved are yet to reach a consensus, forcing the authorities to take extreme measures.
Kazhakkoottam cyber city assistant commissioner R Anilkumar said that the residents and traders were opposing the move. The efforts by the police to convince the locals had failed.
“We had served them notices to remove the steps themselves. But, instead of complying the instructions, they complain that without these steps, they will be forced to cover more distance to reach their shops and residences,” the AC said, adding that the ultimate decision rested with the National Highways Authority (NHAI).
Project director of NHAI R Venkitakrishnan said all the step ladders would be removed immediately. “We have met the police authorities in this regard and they had promised all protection needed. There is a delay in implementation because we are caught up with other important works,” Venkitakrishnan said.
The authorities decided to remove the steps after two pedestrians were killed when they were hit by a speeding motorcycle while attempting to cross the road. “There are designated spots on the highway for pedestrian crossing. But these steps encourage people cross the highway through unauthorized spots, which is dangerous. Motorists will be caught off guard and it will lead to accidents,” Venkitakrishnan said.
