Noted poet and lyricist Pazhavila Ramesan no more

Noted Malayalam poet, lyricist and former assistant director of Bhasha Institute Pazhavila Ramesan passed away at a private hospital here in the early hours on Thursday. He was 83. He was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Noted Malayalam poet, lyricist and former assistant director of Bhasha Institute Pazhavila Ramesan passed away at a private hospital here in the early hours on Thursday. He was 83. He was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.
A native of Perinadu in Kollam district, Ramesan had received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for overall contributions in 2017. He was the co-editor of K Balakrishnan’s ‘Kaumudi’ weekly in the 60’s.
He later joined the Bhasha Institute and worked there till 1993 in various capacities.
He is also a recipient of P Kunhiraman Nair Award, Abu Dhabi Sakthi Award, Muloor Award and Film Critics Award.
Ramesan penned his first film song for Njattady (1979), a debut directorial venture by Bharat Gopy and later on for movies, including Aashamsakalode (1984), Uncle Bun (1991), Malootty (1992) and Vasudha (1992).
Ramesan was also a leading member of ‘Nikunjam’, a friends’ group in the capital city, widely known both in the literary and film circles. Among his published works are compilations of poems such as ‘Mazhayude Jalakam’, ‘Njanente Kaadukalilekku’, ‘Pazhavila Rameshante Kavithakal’ and collection of essays like ‘Mayatha Varakal’, ‘Ormakalude Varthamanam’ and ‘Nervara’.
He has also acted in the movie ‘Sraadham’ directed by V Rajakrishnan.

Condoling his death, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Ramesan always upheld secularism and that he was a proponent of modernism in poetry. Cultural affairs minister A K Balan said the poet was inspired by renaissance values and people’s struggles.
The poet’s mortal remains will be kept at Bhasha Institute office for the public to pay homage from 10am to 1pm on Friday, and a condolence meeting will be held at TNG Hall at Thiruvananthapuram Press Club at 5pm.
The cremation will be held at Santhikavadam crematorium at Thycaud at 2pm on Friday.
