One held for murder of security guard
Thiruvananthapuram: The city police have taken into custody one person in connection with the murder of a security personnel who was employed at Agro Industries Corporation, Kottakkakom, Fort. Sources said the arrest would be recorded on Tuesday.
Madhavan Nair (72), of Janardhana Nivas at Edappuzha Vilakom, Nemom was found dead at the duty room of Agro Industries Corporation at Fort on Thursday morning.
Though the death was initially presumed to be owing to natural causes, but the postmortem pointed at the possibility of strangulation.
Sources said that police had zeroed in on the accused after a thorough character assessment of the deceased. The investigating team probed all sources to know whether Madhavan Nair harboured any kind of enmity with any individual or group. The team also considered the circumstances where he would have got into a conflict with a person at midnight resulting in the murder.
The team hit upon a stumbling block initially as all possible situations conjured up by the officials did not stand as Nair was known to have a clean record and was never involved in any kind of altercations before. He was also not known to have had any bad habits which further complicated the case. The police then focused on people who might have had regular interactions with the victim so as to draw an image regarding his routines and habits. This led police to the information that Madhavan Nair occasionally socialised with a person who was associated with the office where Madhavan was employed as security guard.
The police had initially suspected the death as a murder for theft as the gold chain of Madhavan was missing from the body. The postmortem also revealed that Nair was strangulated. This led police to closely monitor the movements of people who worked in the compound of Agro Industries Corporation. One among the suspects was found to be absent for consecutive days and this strengthened the suspicion of police. The police also received clues from another employee who shared suspicion on one person's involvement in the murder.
Sources said that the person in police custody ran an aquarium in the compound of Agro Industries Corporation office, Kottakakom. However, the police refused to reveal the identity of the person in custody.
The suspect had allegedly shared liquor with Nair on Wednesday night and strangulated him to death during the gettogether. The motive of the murder is still being probed by the police. Though the gold chain worn by Nair was missing, the police are yet to confirm whether the accused committed the crime for stealing the chain.
