The rain continued to wreak havoc in the capital for a third consecutive day, albeit in a low intensity compared to the past two days. The district administration opened one more relief camp here on Friday after six houses at Vilavoorkal panchayat were inundated with water after a tributary of the Karamana river near here overflowed.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/KOLLAM: The rain continued to wreak havoc in the capital for a third consecutive day, albeit in a low intensity compared to the past two days. The district administration opened one more relief camp here on Friday after six houses at Vilavoorkal panchayat were inundated with water after a tributary of the Karamana river near here overflowed.
The residents of these households were shifted to the public library at Kurishumuttom, which was converted into a relief camp.
There are 19 persons in the camp out of which eight are women and four, children.
With this, the total number of relief camps in the district have become eight. There were six relief camps in Thiruvananthapuram taluk and one in Chirayinkeezh taluk. The district collector has warned the people living near rivers to be cautious and requested not to bathe or wash clothes in the rivers.
A house at Neyyatinkara was destroyed and as many as 50 others suffered partial damages in the rain that lashed the capital on the early morning on Friday. Several incidents of tree uprooting were also reported on Friday.
The authorities said that they were yet to assess the total loss of property and crops incurred by the people owing to the rains.
In Kollam, as many as 69 houses were reported to incur serious damages on Friday. While the revenue authorities estimated the loss of houses at Rs 7.95 lakh, the actual loss will be far higher than the official estimates. In several parts of the district, paddy cultivation has been lost in heavy rain.

According to the revenue department figures Kunnathur Taluk have reported damages to 41 houses. In the Kollam taluk 16 houses were damaged while Karunagapally and Punalur have three houses each damaged in the wind and rain. At Kunnikkode village in the Pathanapuram taluk ten houses were submerged in floodwater. The members of these houses moved to their relatives' houses.
The water level at Thenamala dam has touched 104.02m. On Friday it was 102.70 m. The maximum capacity of the dam is 115. 82m. In the rain lashed out on Thursday night, the roof the Craven school here was blown away. Trees were uprooted on Rest House premises and near the Nair's Hospital here.
