THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Railway users have demanded the state government to initiate steps to change the names of Nemam and Kochuveli railway stations as Thiruvananthapuram North and Thiruvananthapuram South stations respectively.
Changing the names of these stations is a long-pending demand of railway users. Kochuveli railway station is located on the north side of Thiruvananthapuram and Nemam towards the south end of the district.
A good number of trains are operated from Kochuveli railway station due to congestion at Thiruvananthapuram Central.
Nemam station is proposed to be developed, as part of electrification and doubling of Kanyakumari-Thiruvananthapuram section and will be able to handle more trains after the completion of the work. The proposed move would benefit people from other states who visit Thiruvananthapuram.
The Divisional Railway Users’ Consultative Committee (DRUCC) members had sought the intervention of Southern Railway administration and railway board in renaming the stations.
“The state government needs to take up the demand with home ministry as it is a technical matter. To change the name of stations, the state government need to pass a resolution in this regard and have to send it to ministry of home affairs. After ministry approves the request and sends us an order, the names can be changed,” said a railway official.
The members of the DRUCC have decided to approach people’s representatives in the district to request the state government to take steps to change the names of stations.
R Krishnan, member of DRUCC, said that it has become an immediate need, as many people from other states were not aware that these two stations were in Thiruvananthapuram.
