Traffic congestion: 2 ROB projects gather momentum
Thiruvananthapuram: The projects to decongest traffic near the level crossings at Edava and Chirayinkeezhu, by constructing two railway overbridges (ROBs), are progressing without much problems.
The social impact assessment (SIA) study for land acquisition at Edava was published, while the district administration started land acquisition procedures at Chirayinkeezhu.
The SIA study in Varkala was conducted by the assigned agency (Planet Kerala) from October 22, 2018 to March 30, 2019.
The team conducted a public hearing on the project on February 23.
Around 173 cents must be acquired for the ROB at Edava, which is being implemented by Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK).
The study identified 68 landowners in the area and noted that the livelihood of 12 of them will be affected by the project.
The district admission has released a notice to begin land acquisition for the project at Chirayinkeezhu, which will be helmed by public works department (PWD).
“The study will be submitted to the expert committee for review. It must approve the study so that revenue department can begin land acquisition. Considering traffic congestion in the area, ROB is needed at the railway gate,” said chairman of SIA study and executive director of Planet Kerala Antony Kunnath.

The ROB near Chirayinkeezhu taluk hospital will be constructed between Vayalikada Junction and Pandakasala.
A total of 98.207 cents owned by 89 persons is required for the work. Once the ROB becomes a reality, connectivity to Anchuthengu and Chirayinkeezhu from Kaniyapuram, Korani and Attingal will become easier.
Prior to the notice, SIA study was conducted by Planet Kerala and the expert committee that reviewed the project had termed the project as a necessity.
“The expert committee termed the project a public need with benefits. Over 90% of the land required for the ROB’s construction has been already acquired and it is necessary to acquire the remaining area. There is no other alternative option to resolve the traffic gridlock,” stated a notice issued by district administration.
District administration has initiated steps to give packages under Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act for the project.
