Two killed, five injured in two separate accidents
Thiruvananthapuram: As many as two persons were killed and five others were injured in two separate accidents that occurred on National Highway 66, on the Kazhakkoottam-Kovalam stretch on Tuesday night.
The first accident occurred at Kuzhivila Junction under Thumba police station limits in which a two-wheeler rider was killed and the pillion rider suffered injuries after they were knocked down by a car going in the opposite direction.
Leji (28) of Nethajipuram near Nedumangad is the deceased. He was a mason. His friend Jaseer is the injured. They were returning home after work when the accident occurred around 8.30pm. The car that caused the accident was going from Trivandrum International Airport to Changanasseri. Even though the injured were rushed to hospital, the doctors could not save the life of Leji. The deceased leaves behind mother Jaseentha and elder brother Aji.
The second accident occurred around 9.30pm at Vellar near Kovalam police station limits. A 40-year-old man was killed and his wife and kid were injured after their motorcycle was knocked by a car. Harland, a resident of Poonthura is the deceased. His wife Ida (35) and daughter Angel (2) were on the pillion seat.
The police said that it was a freak accident that claimed the life of Harland. The car that caused the accident hit another car that further went on to knock down their two-wheeler. Two passengers in the second car, Hareesh and Nixon too suffered injuries after their car plunged into a pit. The police said that injured persons were out of danger and are under treatment.
All the vehicles were going in the same direction. The police suspected that the accident occurred when one car was trying to overtake the other. The police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
On Wednesday, the relatives of the deceased alleged that the gold ornaments of the family went missing from the accident spot. However, Kovalam sub-inspector Ajithkumar said that the ornaments and mobile phones of those involved in the accident were recovered from the spot. The police were yet to receive any formal complaint in this regard, he said.
