Missing NRI traced to Daman
Mittal Saraiya
VADODARA: Former cricketer and NRI, Mittal Saraiya, who had gone missing eight days ago, has been traced to Daman.
The detection of crime branch (DCB) tracked him down on Tuesday and brought him back to the city late in the night. The cops said that Saraiya had gone on his own on November 27 from Karelibaug area of the city.
“We had received information that Saraiya was staying in room number 112 at Umesh Hotel in Daman.
Our team reached there to bring him back to the city,” said Jaydeepsinh Jadeja, DCP (crime). Saraiya is believed to be in hiding there. When asked the reason behind his act, Jadeja said that he can comment only after Saraiya’s further interrogation.
Sources in the police said that Saraiya was facing financial issues and it may have been one of the reasons behind his disappearing act. Saraiya had gone missing from near a bank at Amrapali Complex in Karelibaug on November 27. A CCTV footage later showed that he boarded an auto rickshaw but he disappeared later. When Saraiya didn’t return till late evening, his family approached the police.
Saraiya was a university player in 1970s and he used to play in Zaveri League A division at Baroda Cricket Association (BCA). His team-mates said he was a good cricketer and was also picked up in the Ranji probables.
But Saraiya, who has two daughters, decided to shift to Florida in the US and he started his own business there in late 1970s. Saraiya had arrived in the city last month for treatment of his father. The cops had formed several teams to track him down but they had inkling of the fact that Saraiya had disappeared by own will.
