VIJAYAWADA: After 20 days, Anjana Devi met with success. The octogenarian Anjana had started fasting 20 days back to die before her bed ridden husband. On Saturday, both the husband and the wife died.
Divi Anjana Devi (82) and Divi Kodandarama Sharma (85), natives of Govada in Guntur district had been married for six decades. Kodandarama Sharma used to work as a priest in the Venugopala Swamy Temple and he passed on the post to his son Ramesh.
He was also the state president of Archaka Seva Samiti.
While Kodandarama Sharma was unwell and completely bed ridden for the past six months, Anjana Devi did not have any health issues. According to her daughter-in-law Subhashini, Anajana used tell them that she would die before her husband. “My mother-in-law used to tell us that Kanaka Durga Devi had told her in a dream that she would die as Punyastree in Karteeka Masam,” she said.
Anjana Devi had been depressed and was barely having anything since her husband was unwell. “About 20 days ago, she fell ill and was hospitalised for three days. She forced us to take her home saying that she did not want to die at the hospital. After coming back, she stopped eating. Though we forced her to eat, she would take two mouthfulls of rice at the best,” said Subhashini.
Meanwhile, Kodandarama Sharma’s health further deteriorated and he lost consciousness two days back. On the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, Anjana passed away. “Knowing about her death, relatives started coming. Suddenly, my father-in-law gained consciousness and understood that his wife had passed away. He started weeping loudly and within hours, he also passed away,” Suhasini added.
