VIJAYAWADA: Nellore police in Andhra Pradesh busted an inter-state gang of dacoits from Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal on Wednesday.
The accused—identified as Shaik Hamidujuman (35), an international smuggler from Malda, West Bengal, and three others, Ankith Srivathsav (29), Pawan Chowdary (40), Pradeep Madhavan (34) from Indore, Madhya Pradesh—were involved in the robbery of a cellphone consignment earlier this year at Sri City SEZ.

On February 12 this year, the gang attacked a truck driver and robbed a truck transporting a large consignment of Xiaomi cellphone worth Rs 4.8 crore. The empty truck was recovered the next day, on February 13, at Gowravaram village.
Addressing a press conference, district SP Aiswarya Rastogi stated that they have arrested three important smugglers from Madhya Pradesh and one international smuggler from West Bengal.

Earlier, on May 3, police had arrested two members from the Khanjarabhats dacoity gang from Madhya Pradesh who were responsible for the robbery. “Around 10 teams worked on the case and tracked the lorries from Nellore up to Indore via Hyderabad. Thousands of hours of CCTV footage at toll gates were scanned during the process by multiple teams,” Rastogi said. During the case, the teams carried out investigation in seven states – AP, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Utter Pradesh and West Bengal.

After the arrest of the gang members of Khanjarabhats — Sukesh Hadas and Santosh, both from Dewas district — cops learnt from them about the details of the smugglers in Madhya Pradesh who they had handed over the consignment. The smugglers had revealed that they had sold the consignment to Shaik Hamidujuman, who sold the phones in Bangladesh.
Rastogi, however, revealed that they have managed to recover 70 lakh in cash, an XUV and eight mobile phones from the smugglers.
