Classical dance lovers in the city were presented with a spectacular opportunity to watch Odissi dance performances by young artistes at a recent event held inside the Rabindra Mandap. The evening spelt devotion as the dancers showed their splendid movements to the tune of various Odissi songs.

Dr Bijay Kumar Jena, secretary of Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy, inaugurated the cultural evening in the presence of eminent Odissi dance gurus.
It was the 16th annual event of Nrutyashala – a dance organisation dedicated to teaching and providing platforms to new dancers so that Odissi is made popular.
The programme started with Odissi Mangalacharan followed by Jagannath Swami Nayayana Pathagami. Both young and expert dancers performed to thunderous applause. The evening’s highlight was a dance recital by performers who moved to the devotional song Ahe Neela Saila Prabal Matta Tarana. It had the audience watch in awe. Guru Ashok Ghoshal and Guru Bandita Ghoshal had choreographed the dance steps. After a series of Odissi dance recitals by experts who performed to the songs that praised different gods and goddesses, it was the youngsters’ turn. They danced to Odisha Mo Odisha, showcasing the rich culture, heritage and tradition of the state. In the end, folk dance Dhemsa was performed by young dancers to the beats of Sambalpuri music. It created a beautiful ambience.
“It was a well-spent evening and people could watch young and talented dancers perform taking forward the Odissi dance. If more such events are organised, it will give the youngsters a lot of confidence,” said Srinibas Ghatuari, anchor of the event and an Odissi dancer.
