AIIMS Bhubaneswar comes second in Kayakalp Award for second year in a row

BHUBANESWAR: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, has been awarded as second best hospital among category B hospitals of the country for cleanliness. The institute will get an award of Rs 1 crore for this performance under Kayakalp award scheme launched by the Union ministry of health and family welfare.
It had received the award last year for becoming second clean hospital among category B hospitals (less than 1000 beds).The awards have been selected on the basis of rigorous process including internal assessment and peer assessment followed by external assessment.
The evaluation has been done on some parameters including hospital upkeep, sanitation and hygiene, waste management, infection control, support services and hygiene promotions. Besides, the assessors will physically observe the hospital, review the records, interview staff and patients.
"It is a great honour for our institute to receive such a prestigious award among 34 tertiary care hospitals in the country. This is for the second time that the institute has been awarded the prize consecutively," said Gitanjali Batmanabane, director of the institute, who along with AIIMS Bhubaneswar medical superintendent Sachidananda Mohanty received the award in New Delhi.
She said they follow standard operating procedures to keep the hospital neat and clean. "We keep toilets in OPD corridor clean regularly because hundreds of patients and their attendants visit the hospital every day. We also keep indoor areas clean and disinfected. The hospital manages biomedical waste and sewage effectively," she added.
Besides, the institute provides training to health workers, attendants and nurses to maintain cleanliness in the hospital.
Under A category hospital (having more than 1000 beds), first prize of Rs 3 crore was given to the AIIMS Delhi. In the group B category, the winner was VBCH Silvassa winning Rs 2 crore.
The Kayakalp Award was introduced as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan on May 15, 2015 as a national initiative to recognize and felicitate public health facilities that demonstrate high levels of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control measure.
