New Delhi: In yet another major drug haul, the Coast Guard has seized over 300kg of banned drug Methaqualone from a Myanmarese-boat found operating suspiciously near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The Coast Guard undertook a coordinated sea-air operation, with its fast-patrol vessel ICGS Aruna Asaf Ali leading the charge, to intercept the Myanmarese-boat with its six-member crew and the contraband around 125 nautical miles east of the Little Andaman island on Friday evening.

"In the last three months, this is the second catch of contraband during independent operations being conducted by the Coast Guard in the Andaman and Nicobar Region. Earlier, 1,160kg of Ketamine was seized from another Myanmarese-boat," said an official on Sunday.
On Friday afternoon, a Coast Guard Dornier maritime patrol aircraft had spotted the Myanmarese-boat, which did not respond to radio calls, acting in a suspicious manner. ICGS Aruna Asaf Ali, which was out on a patrol, was diverted to intercept the boat. "The boat failed to stop on being challenged by our ship, which then fired three warning shots in the air. A boarding party embarked on the boat after forcing it to stop," said the official.
"Around 360 packets of a suspicious white crystalline substance were found on the boat. Drug detection kits found it to be Methaqualone. The crew also failed to produce any supporting document. ICGS Aruna Asaf Ali along with the apprehended boat, contraband and crew reached Port Blair on Sunday morning," he added.
