PATNA: Election Commission (EC) on Friday granted recognition to 'Janata Dal (United)' as a recognized State Party in Arunachal Pradesh also and its symbol 'Arrow' has been allotted as the reserved symbol for the JD(U) in the northeastern state.
With this, the JD(U), presently headed by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, has become the ‘recognized state party’ in Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh.
In an order passed on Friday, the Commission’s Secretary Pramod Kumar Sharma said, “Review of poll performance of Janata Dal (United) in the general election to the legislative assembly of Arunachal Pradesh, 2019 shows that the candidates set up by the party have polled 9.89% of the valid votes polled in the said general election and in addition it has won seven out of sixty seats in the Legislative Assembly.”
“It is seen from the above poll performance of the party that it has fulfilled the requirements for recognition as ‘State Party in the State of Arunachal Pradesh, as laid down in Paragraph 6A (i) (6% of total valid votes in Legislative Assembly and 2 seats in Legislative Assembly}, 6A (iii) (3% of total seats in Legislative Assembly or at least 3 seats in the Legislative Assembly, whichever is more} and 6A(v) (8% of total valid votes polled in Legislative Assembly in the state}.
The JD(U) has thus become eligible for recognition as State party in Arunachal Pradesh,” the Commission said in a four-page order.
Expressing happiness over the development, JD(U)’s national general secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan told TOI that his party bagged 9.89% votes in Arunachal Pradesh despite the fact that it was contesting the election for the first time, that too without forming an alliance with any other regional or national parties.
Khan, who is JD(U)’s in charge for Arunachal Pradesh, also said that the party won seven seats out of 15 it contested there. He said all seven JD(U) MLAs won the election defeating the BJP candidates. The JD(U) candidates stood at the second position in four assembly constituency and at the third position in other three constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh assembly polls, he said.
