Modi lays foundations of two 300 bed medical colleges in Jharkhand
RANCHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stones for two 300 bed medical college hospitals in Koderma and Chaibasa districts of Jharkhand on Sunday.
Before launching the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) from Ranchi’s Prabhat Tara ground, Modi laid foundations for the two colleges symbolically at the push of a button from the stage.

Modi also said Jharkhand’s push towards building healthcare infrastructure was an example of his government’s grand and quick paced development in all fronts.
To be built over a 25-acre plot, the Chaibasa medical college will have 300 beds and 100 MBBS seats when it is ready by 2020. There will be world class classrooms, staff quarters, student hostels and eco-friendly features like rainwater harvesting and sewage treatment plants. It will draw an investment of Rs 272 crore. The existing Sadar hospital will be upgraded to a 300-bed facility at a cost of Rs 42 crore and benefit 65 lakh people.
Likewise, the proposed 300-bed facility at Koderma will draw Rs 274 crore and will have a research facility along with modern amenities like the one in Chaibasa, the Raghubar Das government said.
“Four years ago, there were three medical colleges and 250 MBBS seats. Now, the number of colleges is set to increase to 10 and seats to almost 1,200,” Das said, without naming the upcoming colleges in Dumka, Palamu and Hazaribag and proposed ones at Bokaro, Koderma and Chaibasa and the regional center of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Aiims) in Deoghar.
Speaking after Das, the PM said: “Eight medical colleges and 1,200 students in four years. It is the best example of how work is done, how fast it is done, and on which scale it is done.”
Union health and family welfare minister JP Nadda said the PM will inaugurate the medical colleges in Dumka, Hazaribag and Palamu, scheduled to be ready by early 2019.
