Under water for 11 months a year, Goa village questions 'sacrifice' for dam

GOA: Gajanan Kurdikar was 42 when he watched swirling waters of the Salaulim river swallow the home he grew up in, just as it did his high school, the local market and whatever remained of the tiny village of Kurdi in South Goa. The year was 1986. Since then, Kurdikar — now 75 and settled elsewhere — travels to see his homeland resurface for a few days at this time of the year as the water level recedes.
Broken remnants of what were once sprawling houses, stumps of trees long dead and rusted household items peeked from the ground as the village became visible early this month. An 8km road that led to Kurdi has also re-emerged, allowing original residents like Kurdikar to reach their ancestral place to "celebrate" its existence.
