22-year-old found dead in rented flat

A 22-year-old woman, who had moved into a rented apartment at Charu Chandra Place East with her live-in partner, was found hanging on Tuesday night.

KOLKATA: A 22-year-old woman, who had moved into a rented apartment at Charu Chandra Place East with her live-in partner, was found hanging on Tuesday night.
The duo had rented the apartment a week back. Although victim Urmi Das’s relative claimed she was murdered, cops said a postmortem is being done ascerta in whether it is a case of homicide. Urmi’s live-in partner Sudipta Das has been arrested.
The Charu Market police have registered a case of abetment to suicide.
According to cops, Urmi is a resident of the Lake Gardens (KMDA quarters) and had an arranged marriage on February 2016 with a person named Subho Pramanik.
But after the registry, Urmi did not move in with him. The two had filed for a divorce and the proceedings are on, claimed police.
A investigating officer said: “About six months back, Urmi moved in with Sudipto Das, employed with the sales team of a shop that deals in mobiles. Recently, they had been arguing a lot and neighbours often heard the girl scream. The duo two had rented the flat about a week back. Tension between the couple increased after Sudipto left his job but he kept assuring Urmi that he would get a better job quickly.”
On Tuesday, several friends of both Urmi and Sudipto came to the house and there was a party. Soon, after the guests left, the couple began to argue. “Sudipto said that he left the house after the argument even after Urmi locked herself up. When he returned back with some grocery and began knocking at the door, there was no response. Scared, he went to the landlord’s residence and sought his son Arko Chakraborty’s help,” said the officer “We two broke open the door and found Urmi hanging,” Chakroborty. Urmi was rushed to M R Bangur Hospital but was declared brought dead.
Urmi’s father Uttam Das, however, claimed that it was he and his wife were present at the time when Urmi’s body was discovered. This was after they had called their daughter several times at night but did not get any response.
The family claimed that it was a case of murder. “We believe Sudipto and his mother are trying to pass off this murder as suicide. Sudipto ill-treated my niece both mentally and physically,” claimed a relative of Urmi.
