BCCI asks PCB to change Asia Cup venue
NEW DELHI: Pakistan, which is supposed to host the Asia Cup in September 2020, have been told by BCCI to change the venue for the event. This was conveyed to the Pakistan officials during the Asian Cricket Council meeting in Dhaka on Thursday.
Like India offered the hosting right of the 2018 Asia Cup to United Arab Emirates, Pakistan have been asked to follow suit.
"Playing in Pakistan is out of question and so the hosts have been told to think about an alternative arrangement," a source told TOI.
India had turned down the offer to host the Asia Cup because of its inability to host Pakistan. It is understood that the Middle-East could again become the venue for the 2020 version. Officially, Pakistan is still posturing that their country is safe for cricket and Asia Cup would be a perfect opportunity for the Asian giants to come together and make it possible. With still time on their side, Pakistan are hoping that the situation would improve, but India is not showing any intention to bow. Pakistan would have to eventually give into BCCI's request.
Earlier, BCCI didn't send its representative for the ACC's AGM in Lahore due to "security concerns" and existing political tension between neighbouring nations.
It is also understood that BCCI's acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary is the head of the ACC finance committee, which has representatives from Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, UAE and Hong Kong. The formation of the finance committee happened at the ACC meeting on Thursday. The head of the development committee which is from Pakistan would be a special invitee to the finance committee. Vice versa, Choudhary would be a special invitee to the development committee.
