CHENNAI: The 2019-20 domestic season may be a few months away, but Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) are already looking to spruce up their support staff. The team is in talks with West Indian legend Alvin Kallicharran to mentor the side during the season.
"We are in advanced talks with him. He is expected to be in India next month when we will be looking to finalise the deal.
The presence of someone as illustrious as Kallicharran is bound to pep up our boys," sources told TOI on Wednesday. The 70-year-old Kallicharran represented West Indies in 66 Tests and 31 ODIs. While he made 4399 runs at an average of 44.43 in the longest format of the game, he managed 821 runs at 34.41.
It is also learnt that Bishan Singh Bedi and former Tamil Nadu leggie VV Kumar have been approached to be mentors of the team. "We want the best brains to share their inputs with our team and that's why we are looking to bring Bedi and Kumar on board. We are certain that the duo will add a lot of value to our side," the source added.
While Paras Dogra and Pankaj Singh will continue to be the two outstation cricketers for the side, KB Arun Karthick - who turned up for Kerala during the last Ranji season - may be the third outstation member in the side. "We are hopeful he will turn up for us this season," said the source. Pondicherry, who featured in the Plate Group last season, finished third behind Uttarakhand and Bihar.
